Letting the professionals handle the heavy lifting (pun intended) is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Not only will movers ensure the entire process is done right, they’ll make sure your belongings get to their destination safely.

It’s not every day that you pack up your entire life and hit the road for a new home. You’re bound to have questions when it comes to hiring movers. Be sure to ask them! Asking questions is one of the best ways to get peace of mind about your move and to make sure you understand the entire process.

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions we get from customers when it comes to hiring and working with movers.

What is involved in an in-home estimate?

During an in-home estimate, an estimator will visit your home and estimate the volume/weight of all the belongings you’ll be moving. He’ll also discuss move details such as dates, packing services, etc. At the end of the visit, your estimator will draft a customized written estimate for your review.

I have to reschedule my move. What should I do?

Sometimes, life gets in the way of a scheduled move. As soon as there’s a problem, contact your relocation consultant to notify them that your move dates have changed. They can process any changes to your plan and discuss updates. Remember, your moving cost estimate may change depending on the dates you selected.

    What is a non-binding estimate?

A non-binding estimate charges you according to the actual weight of your shipment or the time it took to move it, plus the actual cost of the services that you requested and were needed. With a non-binding estimate, there are chances that your actual moving cost may increase up to 10% more than the estimated cost. You may ask your mover for a binding estimate if you need to work within a budget. Expect a binding estimate to be higher, to account for unknown costs and variables.

Do you tip movers? How much?

If you’re satisfied with the services of your movers, you can recognize and appreciate their efforts by tipping them. Tipping movers shows them that their services are valued. Tipping movers is not mandatory, but it is customary. In general, 15-20% tip is the typical standard for local moves. You can also provide movers with water bottles, coffee, snacks or lunch, depending on the length and hardship involved in the work.

Are there discount coupons offered by moving companies?

There are many moving and storage companies that offer affordable moving services. Moving coupons help you move without spending too much and some companies tend to launch them as a seasonal promotion. Some examples of common moving coupons or discounts include:

    • Free rental of supplies when you hire movers
    • Percentage or fixed-rate discounts for different types of moves
    • Date-based move discounts, such as certain days or weeks

    Have questions? Ask them!

If you have questions you want to ask a moving or storage company that aren’t listed above, ask them! It’s always better to ask questions and get information than to assume and be wrong or not know altogether. When it comes to something as important as packing and moving, you want all the answers you can get.
