Protection for Local Moves
Ben Hur complies with federal and state laws regarding long distance moving services. We are licensed movers who conform to the standards laid down by the law. The fact is accidents do happen, despite the best efforts of the movers. Some items may be lost or damaged in the transit. Prior to the move customers can determine the type and amount of reimbursement they will want in case things go wrong.
Ben Hur offers two levels of movers’ liability (valuation). These are not insurance agreements, as governed by State Insurance Laws. These are contractual tariff levels of liability authorized by the Department of Transportation. Alternatively, you may also protect your articles with a third party insurance agent including your own home or renters insurance.
Full Value Protection (FVP)
This is the most comprehensive option available for the protection of your goods, other than purchasing insurance through a third party. If an article is lost, destroyed, or damaged while in our custody, we will at our discretion,:
- Repair the article to the extent necessary to restore it to the same condition as when it was first received by us, or pay you for the cost of such repairs
- Replace the article of like kind
- Pay you for the cost of a replacement article at the current market replacement value, regardless of the age of the lost or damaged article.
The cost for FVP is based on the value that you place on your shipment. Contact your sales representative for details. Please note, that under the FVP level of liability, an article of extraordinary value must be listed as such on the shipping documents. If shipper does not specifically list such articles, we have the right to limit our liability for the loss or damage of those articles deemed to be of extraordinary value. An article of extraordinary value is any item whose value exceeds $100 per pound (for example, jewelry, silverware, china, furs, antiques, oriental rugs, artwork, computer software, electronics, etc.) It is very important you to list these articles as extraordinary value articles and you make the necessary declaration of the value of the entire shipment.
Released Value (RVP)
This is the most economical protection available, since it is offered at no additional charge. However, the protection is minimal. Under this option, the mover assumes liability for no more than 60 cents per pound per article (30 cents in NY State non-binding estimate moves). Loss or damage claims are settled based on the weight of the article multiplied by 60 cents per pound. For example, if a 100-pound TV, valued at $800 were lost or destroyed, we would be liable for no more than $60 (100 pounds x 60 cents per pound). There is no charge for this base protection.
Third Party Insurance
In addition to the liability options, you may insure your move by purchasing a separate insurance from a third-party insurance company. If you choose this option you have to release your shipment for transportation at the Released Value Protection rate of 60 (or 30) cents per pound per article. The third party insurance is not valuation coverage governed by Federal Law, but optional insurance regulated under State Law. If you purchase this separate coverage, Ben Hur will be liable only for an amount not exceeding 60 (or 30) cents per pound per article as specified in the RVP option above. The balance of the loss and/or damage is recoverable from the insurance company up to the amount of insurance purchased. We work with the following companies:
