Moving while being a Single Mother

By Administrator | | Leave a comment

Moving is not an easy process. There are many things that obviously have to be done, then there are those tiny things you need to take care of. It takes mental and physical preparation to move. You will be moving to a new place, with new people, probably a new job as well. Along with all this, there is an added responsibility of another person you carry, if you have kids. This magnifies threefold if you have a child to take care of, alone. Everything is a challenge for a single parent. You not only have to be responsible for yourself, but for the joys and sorrows of your little one as well. So, if you have a toddler below the age of five, and if you plan to relocate, then this piece is for you.

When you make this fresh start, make sure you are at least on the same page with your child. A child develops deep attachment with the people they have in their routine between the ages 2-5. If you have lived in the same place during these years, then you need to prepare your child mentally for the move. You need to sit down with him or her and have ‘the talk’ with them. You may or may not face a tantrum, but it will be best if you stay calm and try to explain to the child why it’s a necessity. It will be very helpful in fact, if you take the child to the place you are moving to and show them around. But before you do so, make sure that the place is suitable for a child of tender years.

It’s advisable to start your preparation a week before you have planned to move to your next location. Be very well planned about how you pack. You will definitely need a hired help. Ask the movers to provide you with sturdy boxes. Label these boxes according to the items that will be placed in them. Keep all the articles of your child in separate boxes. It’s good if you have chosen a corner of your house to store the moving boxes. A week before moving, you should only pack things that you do not use daily. This is a good time to get rid of things you do not need. With a toddler in tow, there is a definite possibility that there will be a lot of that. So, clean up the mess and move towards a fresh start.

When finally you have to start packing your bags and load them into the rental truck it’s best if you move the things in, according to the way they will be loaded into your new house. The things and boxes that go into a particular room should preferably be moved in a consecutive order. The things that you use the most, should be loaded in the end, so that they are the first to be unloaded. If you have a trusted friend, or close family, then you can leave the child with them while you move the articles, as the child might get hurt during the process. If this is not an option, then you might want to empty out a room, and instruct the child to stay there. This might not be an easy feat, but give the child something to keep him or her involved. May the move be for the best, and have a happy stay in the new place!
