Packing Tips
Packing Services
Ben Hur offers full packing and unpacking services, as well as partial packing and
unpacking services for electrical equipment, lamps, artwork and breakables. Ask your Ben
Hur moving consultant about the advantages of having us help you pack. Remember, if you
pack yourself, we’re responsible for damage to an item only if it’s clearly
due to negligence in handling.
Packing Tips
If you choose to pack your belongings yourself, here are some helpful tips:
- A lighter load. Moving is a good opportunity to make a fresh
start. Before you move, donate or recycle old clothes, magazines, unused toys, dishes
and other unneeded items. Leaving these items behind will save you money and time
—and give you more space in your new location.
- Room labels. Label each box by room for easy placement at
delivery.
- Loose items. Place all loose items in boxes.
- Heavy and light Items. Place books and other heavy items in small
boxes. You can place linens and other light items in larger boxes.
- Breakable items. When you pack dishes and other breakable items,
first cushion the bottom of the box. Then wrap each item separately with packing paper
or newspaper—making sure that every surface is wrapped where it touches another
item. Use bubble wrap for special pieces. Write “FRAGILE” on the outside of
the box.
- Side tables and small cabinets. These pieces of furniture can remain
full if they contain light items like linens or clothing.
- Desks, large and antique cabinets. Empty all drawers in pieces like
this.
- File cabinets. If your move doesn’t require going up and down
stairs, we can move vertical file cabinets of any size with their contents intact. We
can also move lateral file cabinets up to two drawers high with their contents intact.
If you have larger lateral files, please empty all drawers above the second drawer. If
your move involves stairs, we can only move two-drawer vertical file cabinets with their
contents intact. You’ll need to empty all other file cabinets.
- Bookcases and wall units. Empty all bookcases and wall units. The
moving team will wrap and pack loose shelves separately.
- Computers and other electronics. Back up your computer before the
move. Unplug and mark wires to ensure easy reconnection. Pack equipment well in heavy-duty
boxes using cushioning materials.
- Artwork and mirrors. Place artwork, such as statues and small wall
hangings, in boxes and marked “FRAGILE.” Use crates or special picture boxes
to pack medium and large hanging artwork.
- Table lamps. Separate shades, bulbs, and bases before packing in a
box marked “FRAGILE.”
- DO NOT PACK money, jewelry, important papers, perishable items or
flammable materials.
