On and After Moving Day
Moving day
- A Ben Hur foreman will supervise your move directly. The foreman is in charge of
the other movers and responsible for fulfilling the moving agreement smoothly and
professionally. The foreman is your personal contact if you have questions or
last-minute requests.
- Be sure to receive copies of the order for service and the bill of lading before the
move gets started.
- Offer the movers something to drink. Don’t offer alcohol.
- Make sure the movers have directions to their destination.
- While unloading, tell the movers where you’d like things to go. Many customers
prepare a floor plan before their move. If you have one, give a copy to the foreman. Placing
your furniture and boxes in the right place as they’re being unloaded saves time and
makes getting settled a lot easier.
- Your foreman will give you a form you can use to evaluate the performance of your moving
team. Your feedback is very important to us, so please complete and return the form.
After the move
Start unpacking and enjoying your new home. There’s still a lot to do—like finding out
about local medical and health services, libraries, classes and opportunities to get involved
socially with the community. We wish you a wonderful new beginning. We’d love to hear about your
experience with Ben Hur. When you have a moment, please send us a note by mail, fax or e-mail.
- Locate your local post office. Mail forwarded from your old address will have a yellow address
label so you can notify the sender of your new address.
- Locate police and fire stations, as well as hospitals and gas stations near your home.
- Scout your new neighborhood for shopping areas. You may need furniture, tools or housewares
unexpectedly.
- Call the Department of Sanitation in your new town to find out when crews collect trash. Also
ask whether your new community has recycling programs.
- Seek out new service providers, including a bank, cleaners, doctor, dentist, veterinarian.
- Register to vote. Call your local board of elections for specific registration information. Ask
them how to notify your previous voting district of your change of address.
- If you’ve moved to a different state, contact the Department of Motor Vehicles to exchange
your driver's license.
- Call your Chamber of Commerce for helpful information about:
- Schools
- Cable service
- Cultural events and community activities
- Libraries and parks
- Availability of emergency calling services, such as 911
- Give your new doctor and dentist with your medical history. You may need to request your file
from your previous doctor/dentist.
- Transfer insurance policies to an agent in your new community. You may also wish to make a detailed
list of your belongings, their value, and your coverage.
- Give your new home a good cleaning.
- Moving can be stressful. Watch for effects on family members and pets so you can provide reassurance
and a helping hand.
